Manager, Canadian Taxation

We are seeking a Tax Manager to join our Victoria-based team. This is a client-facing position that requires experience communicating financial information in a public practice setting.

Job Description

Performance Expectations:
• Responsible for the delivery of industry specific and technical expertise relating to complex tax issues
• Development and implementation of tax planning strategies
• Preparation of tax election forms required for personal and corporate clients
• Facilitate the development of new approaches to improve processes
• Work with junior team members to ensure proper documentation is prepared for the client and file procedures are followed by applied firm standards
• Preparation and/or review or personal, corporate and trust returns for accuracy and completeness
• Development of team members by providing feed back to facilitate their professional and personal development
• Support tax compliance services delivery for the office to ensure timely and accurate tax filings
• Correspond with the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial ministries regarding client issues
• Research and correspond with team members and clients in response to specific personal and corporate tax inquires
• Keep clients and team members up to date on relevant emerging tax issues

Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following requirements:
• Completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
• Enrolment in, or completion of, the In-Depth Tax Course
• 4+ years of public practice experience
• Experience preparing and reviewing domestic tax compliance and implementing tax reorganizations
• Experience working with and developing junior team members
• Prior client-facing experience
• Strong time-management abilities and self-motivation
• Experience working with accounting and tax software (CaseWare/Caseview, MS Office, Taxprep, Sage 50, QuickBooks, Knotia etc.)
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

The ability to work extended hours during busy season is required. In exchange, we offer significant flexibility for a reduced work week in slower seasons and/or extended vacations during summer months.

Administrative Assistant/Client Coordinator

We are seeking an Administrative Assistant/Client Coordinator to join Burkett & Co.’s talented team. The successful candidate will reflect our firm’s core values while provide high level administrative support to all members of our team as well as our clients.  The right person will recognize that their role in our firm is vital and has the possibility of growing into something much more.  This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Office Manager.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare materials for client meetings, assist with setting up client meetings, debriefs and follow ups
• Maintain client database, electronic, and paper files
• Provide exceptional customer service to our existing and new clients both on the phone and by email/mail correspondence
• General office tidiness, prep boardrooms for meetings, co-ordinate boardroom availability
• Co-ordinate travel arrangements, business and personal for management, as required
• Mail opening and sorting, mail services for clients, prepare packages and coordinate with courier & mail service
• Monitor and maintain office supply inventory
• Oversee maintenance of office equipment (fax, copier, scanners etc.), office furniture and lights, communicate with janitorial staff
• Maintain and update policy and procedure manuals and standard letters to CRA
• Perform work related errands (i.e.: post office and bank runs) and other tasks, as requested by your supervisor

Qualifications:
• Education, training or prior experience in an administrative support role, experience working in an accounting office an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, prior client-facing experience
• Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals, as well as independently
• Handle varied roles and responsibilities and meets deadlines
• A high regard for accuracy and attention to detail in fast-paced, high pressure environment
• Strong work ethic and motivation
• Ability to troubleshoot basic computer/technical issues
• The ability to work extended hours during busy season (January to April) is required

Position Expectations

Within the first 30 days the Administrative Assistant/Client Coordinator will be accountable for:
• Prepare materials for client meetings independently
• Set-up new clients, maintain existing client database
• Prepare cheques for office payables, collecting receivables, processing credit card payments and bank deposits
