Manager, Canadian Taxation

We are seeking a Tax Manager to join our Victoria-based team. This is a client-facing position that requires experience communicating financial information in a public practice setting.

Job Description

Responsibilities of the position will include:
• Identify and implement tax planning strategies
• Preparation and/or review of personal, corporate and trust tax returns
• Support tax compliance services delivery for the office to ensure timely and accurate tax filings
• Preparation and/or review of Review engagements and Notice to Reader engagements
• Other types of special engagements, as necessary

Working at Burkett & Co. is rewarding but fast-paced, we serve clients with justifiably high expectations of our team. A high regard for accuracy and attention to detail is essential. Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following requirements:
• CPA designation
• Enrolment in, or completion of the In-Depth Tax Course
• 3+ years of public practice experience
• Experience working with and developing junior staff
• Prior client-facing experience
• Proficient with accounting software (Caseware/Caseview, MS Office, Taxprep, Sage 50, Quickbooks, Knotia, etc.)
• Experience working in a paperless environment
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Works well in a collaborative, team-based environment
• Handles varied roles and responsibilities and meets deadlines
• Strong work ethic and motivation

Ability to work extended hours during busy season is required. In exchange, we offer significant flexibility for a reduced work week in slower seasons and/or extended vacations during summer months.

Manager, Family Office Services

We are seeking a Manager, Family Office Services to join our Victoria-based team. This is a client-facing position ideally suited to someone equally comfortable working on high-level strategic issues as they are rolling their sleeves up and diving into the detail when required.

Job Description

Responsibilities of the position will include:
• Identify and coordinate tax planning strategies
• Ensure timely preparation and/or review of personal, corporate and trust tax returns
• Maintain up to date and global knowledge of financial products, tax legislation, economics, markets and risk
• Oversight of the family office, liaising with the tax and investment teams
• Managing governance, compliance and corporate secretariat
• Other types of special engagements, as necessary

Staff Accountant, CPA Articling Position

We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Victoria-based team. This is a pre-approved CPA articling position.

This opportunity will provide the student with interesting and relevant work experience toward the pursuit of a professional accounting designation. The student will have an opportunity to apply their accounting and tax knowledge to a wide range of corporate clients as well as personal clients that face a variety of complex tax issues. Burkett & Co. has employed a co-op student for the past several years and strives to ensure this term position is a mutually beneficial experience. The successful candidate will work with all members of our team and actively participate in team meetings.

Job Description

Responsibilities of the position will include:
• Assistance with personal tax season administration

• Preparation of corporate and individual income tax returns
• Detailed analysis of revenue, expense and investment transactions
• Other types of special engagements as necessary

Qualifications:
• Enrolled in 4th year accounting program with a desire to pursue their CPA designation
• Strong attention to detail and solid analytical skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Willingness to work extended hours during March and April

We are seeking a co-op student to work closely with Burkett & Co.’s talented team for a four-month term from January to April 2021.
